        Rapid population growth and uncontrolled industrial development are seriously degrading the urban and semi-urban environment in many parts of the world, placing enormous strain on natural resources and undermining efficient and sustainable development. Today, the need is to raise awareness on the use of appropriate technologies for efficient management of solid waste. Against this backdrop, the course will discuss the basic concepts of solid waste and their classifications based on sources and types followed by the aspects of environmentally sound management practices and the current scenario of solid waste in India.

  3. Waste Collection, Storage and Transport.

  4. Waste Disposal.

  5. Waste Processing Techniques.

  6. Source Reduction, Product Recovery and Recycling.

  7. Recovery of Biological Conversion Products: Composts and Biogas.

  8. Incineration and Energy Recovery.

  9. Hazardous Waste: Management and Treatment.

  10. Integrated Waste Management (IWM).

  11. Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing data in planning and management of MSW.

Course Schedule:

  • Class Room Briefing and Introductory Sessions at the beginning of the course (2-3 days).
  • Interactive Session through WEB and Email for three months.
  • Midterm Exam after Third Month.
  • In Fourth Month Field Work, Final Contact Sessions for Three Days.
  • Final Exam at end of Fourth Month.

Qualifications & Requirements:

         This Course is open to all Graduates. Participants are expected to take part in all activities that form part of course in addition the participants should work on individual projects. During course, participants should compulsorily attend to interactive chat session for which some grading will be given. Participants should actively participate in the course for best results. A certificate along with grades will be given to all the successful participants.

Evaluation is Done at Two Levels:

        Concept level and Module level: At concept level, after student goes through each concept, he/she is evaluated online by randomly displaying multiple-choice questions. Each question carries some weightage of marks. Based on his/her test performance, system checks the number of questions he/she has got right, and the performance is evaluated. At Module level, after student completes all the concepts, he/she is given final exam, which will be held at CCE. Concept level evaluation marks will also be considered for grading. Completion of a project is a partial requirement for the course.

Duration and Course Fee:

         This course is designed for 4 months (totally 2+1 credits)

        Course Fee: Rs 9000 (for ISTE Members the Course Fee: Rs 6000).   Number of registrants are restricted to 50 students. Admission is based on first come, first serve basis

         Applicants must submit a Curriculum Vitae and the application form that includes the following:

  • Description of their current work, if employed or their specialization.
  • An Outline of their individual project: specially skills they gain  in the course
  • how it will be applied in a project that will be helpful in their future career.

        Along with the application the course fee has to be sent in the form of DD only. DD to be drawn in the favour of  ' Registrar, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore ', payable at Bangalore.
